Workshop Four:
Street Photography : Maurice Henri

Walk along with Maurice Henri and learn the art of Street photography first hand as he describes in his own words:

Street photography is high on my list of preferred style of image making because I enjoy capturing real life stories as they happen in real time. Street Views is an ongoing body of work depicting everyday life that is both informal and documentary in nature.

Fine street photography is a form of visual and mindful meditation. Working directly from observation and intuition, I aspire to amalgamate the character of the person within his environment into the image while documenting the ever changing progress of life as it develops.

These images are meant to be viewed up close and slowly, because there are layers of detail easily missed. I simply want the viewer to get an objective view of my vision within the existing situation with the hope that from my choice of medium, I will transmit a message to the viewer. For me, that is what photography is about; sharing your vision.

Held at the Crowne Plaza, these sessions will allow you to hear presentations from our visiting photographers on a variety of inspirational topics.

19:00:00 • Presentation One
Maurice Henri

In this presentation Maurice will talk about the “Artistic Step” and how it applies to his work in Street Photography

ARTISTIC STEP – MAURICE HENRI

I always believed that I did not have a “artistic step”. In having one, it seems to to me, that pre-planning the now, the where and the why would abstain me from the destination. For me, this pre-envisioned direction lacks of essence, i.e. to experience the unknown, the risk and doubt, construction and deconstruction, … for me, all things fitting for creation.

As photographer, I am closer to the subject when I do not have intentions, but I live a sense of calm all the same when I photograph. It is thus at the same time an exploration of color and light, of contemplation and meditation. Therefore, my “artistic step”… simply, a step.

My work is guided by my desires of the moment, the need to communicate and observe closely what occurs in my environment. I give myself freedom to choose the medium, which nurtures at that moment my feelings. All this amalgamates and accumulates to assemble a scenario, that guides me towards the series. Several continuations of images are arranged together under a selected topic and usually constitute a complete project.

More importantly, as a photographer attracted to nature, I give myself the task to share my vision and my love of nature. I can only hope that by seeing its beauties, more people will start to like it... and it is very natural to want to protect what we like.

18:00:00 • Presentation Two
Lens Choice for the Creative Photographer

Darwin Wiggett & Samantha Crysthanthou

Creative photographers always consider how their tools can be used to affect the look, mood and story of their images. One of the most powerful but often overlooked creative tools in the photographer's arsenal is lens choice. It's amazing how choice of focal length can enhance or detract from the message behind the photo. Are you using your lenses to their most creative advantages? If not, come and learn how you can use gear you already own to make more creative and expressive images.

19:00:00 • Presentation Three
Daryl Benson & David Corkum

Capturing the initial photograph is often just the first step in a creative process that can take a picture through many stages before arriving at a final image. Digital offers so many possibilities from simple B&W or infrared conversions to montage, collage or blending of textures, edges and type. The use of type with images, both visually and to communicate, opens the door to many ideas once it’s understood. The techniques discussed in this presentation will require an intermediate understanding of Photoshop. I’ll have speaker’s notes available showing the step-by-step details for all the techniques discussed. They will be available as a downloadable PDF from my website.

There are many techniques used to achieve certain looks or results photographically. I’ll discuss some of these. However, more important are the ideas. With ideas you can develop your own techniques for getting there. It’s the ideas to being visually aware and understanding how graphic elements combine to enhance or reduce the effectiveness of an image that I would like to talk most about. Once the mind has been expanded to include new ideas it will never return to its original shape.

David Corkum

In this presentation you will see the types of images produced by a commercial photographer. If a client has a product, service or location they are trying to promote, then a commercial photographer is whom they would hire. You will get to see some behind the scene images to get a better understanding of the world of commercial photography.

What hardware and software are required? How can panoramic images be displayed? This workshop will cover both theory and practice of panoramic photography for photographers of all levels, from point and shoot to DSLRs.
